About Wentworth Castle

Wentworth Castle Gardens have been the subject of an ambitious plan to restore the magnificent estate, once home to the Earls of Strafford, back to its former glory.

The estate occupies a striking location in a landscape of rolling hillside near to the town of Barnsley. It is a listed Grade I Landscape, the only one of its kind in Yorkshire. Within the estate there are 40 acres of pleasure gardens, magnificent collections of Magnolia's, Camellia's and Rhododendrons, numerous garden monuments, including the glorious Gothic folly known as Stainsborough Castle which was constructed in the 18th century. There is also an abundance of wildlife to explore.

Historically, the estate was purchased by Thomas Wentworth from the Cutler family in 1708, at the time it was known as the Stainsborough Estate, but after substantial rebuilding and refurbishment, Stainsborough Hall was renamed Wentworth Castle. In 1711, Thomas Wentworth was created Ist Earl of Strafford of the 2nd creation. The estate passed down the line through various family members, either by direct descent or marriage, until it was finally left to Captain Bruce Canning Vernon-Wentworth (1862-1951) who died without issue, having previously sold the estate to Barnsley Corporation in 1948.

The estate offers various open days and guided tours.
